Regenerative ranching is a holistic, principles-based approach to raising livestock that aims to restore and enhance the entire ecosystem by prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, and water cycles, rather than simply sustaining the current land quality. It is a mindset and not a rigid set of rules, adapting practices to the specific environmental, economic, and social context of each ranch.

Key Principles and Practices:


Regenerative ranching employs several key principles to work in concert with nature:

 

  • Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) Grazing: This core practice involves moving livestock (cattle, sheep, etc.) through small sections of pasture and allowing previously grazed areas adequate time for rest and recovery. This mimics the natural grazing patterns of wild herds, which prevents overgrazing, encourages diverse plant growth, and helps incorporate organic matter (manure) into the soil.

  • Minimizing Soil Disturbance: Tillage is greatly reduced or eliminated to protect soil structure, prevent erosion, and leave the vital underground fungal and microbial communities undisturbed.

  • Keeping the Soil Covered: Ensuring the ground is covered year-round with living plants or plant residues (soil armor) helps to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and prevent erosion from wind and rain.

  • Maximizing Biodiversity: Moving away from monocultures and incorporating a diverse mix of plant species (including cover crops) fosters a rich ecosystem above and below ground, which in turn reduces pests and improves the soil's natural resilience.

  • Maintaining Continuous Living Roots: Having living roots in the soil for as much of the year as possible provides a continuous food source for soil microbes through photosynthesis, which is crucial for nutrient cycling and soil health.

  • Reducing Chemical Inputs: By improving soil fertility and plant resilience naturally, ranchers can decrease their dependence on synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides over time, lowering costs and reducing pollution.
